Stiers was born in the Illinois town of Peoria. He began acting in northern California before moving to New York City and joining John Houseman's The Acting Company. Mel Price, the station manager on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, was one of her early television roles. In 1977, David Ogden Stiers joined the cast of M*A*S*H.
His role was not a stand-in for Larry Linville's Frank Burns, but rather a unique counterpoint for Hawkeye Pierce and B.J. Hunnicutt. He remained in M*A*S*H until the series' conclusion. In the 1978 horror/mystery picture Magic, starring Anthony Hopkins and Ann-Margaret, Stiers made a funny appearance as a toupee-wearing television executive.
