David Garza (pronounced Dah-VEED) was born in Irving, Texas, and was introduced to music at a young age. Garza's mother sang in a choir, his elder brothers were classic rock aficionados, and he adored the Mexican music he heard on the radio.
Garza enrolled in the University of Texas-Austin in 1989, following experiences in a number of high-school bands, where he and his bizarrely titled ensemble Twang Twang Shaka Boom received industry notice for Garza's blend of pop-savvy lyrics and Robert Plant-style singing. He continued to gig in and outside of Texas after leaving the group to go solo.
