David Acheson Biography

CEO and Founder of The Acheson Group, Dr. David Acheson came to the firm with more than 30 years experience in medical and food safety research. David is a University of London Medical School graduate and until 1987 practiced internal medicine and infectious diseases in the United Kingdom before moving to the New England Medical Center where he studied the molecular pathogenesis of foodborne pathogens and became an Associate Professor at Tufts University in Boston. At the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, David served as the Chief Medical Officer before forming The Acheson Group and then joined the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2002 as the Chief Medical Officer at the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN). David was appointed as the Assistant after serving as the Director of CFSAN’s Office of Food Defense, Communication and Emergency Response, and then Associate Commissioner for Foods which gave him the authority over all food and feed issues and the responsibility for the development of the 2007 Food Protection Plan, which served as the foundation for many of the authorities granted to FDA by the Food Safety Modernization Act. David has used his food safety knowledge, expertise in crisis response and regulatory insight to advise food industry clients around the globe on how best to control risk in a global supply chain and growing regulatory landscape after founding the food safety practice within Leavitt Partners in July 2009. David is accepted internationally for his research in infectious diseases and his public health expertise and has been published in major publications as a result of this. He is a regular guest on national news programs and a speaker in demand. He serves on food safety advisory groups of several major food manufacturers and on a long list of boards. David is identified as a fellow at both the Infectious Disease Society of America and Royal College of Physicians (London).
