David A. Kolb Biography

David Kolb earned a BA in psychology, philosophy, and religion from Knox College and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Harvard University. He is most recognized for his work on experiential learning and learning styles, which he outlined in Experiential Learning: Experience as a Source of Learning and Development. Conversational Learning: An Experiential Approach to Knowledge Creation, Innovation in Professional Education: Steps on a Journey from Teaching to Learning, and Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach are some of the other works. He has also written several journal papers and book chapters on experiential learning. He has been honored with four honorary degrees for his contributions to experiential learning in higher education. David's current research interests include team learning studies that investigate the impact of team members' learning styles on the team's learning and performance, research on learning flexibility, research on the cultural determinants of learning style, and research on experiential learning in conversation. He is active in a variety of educational learning-focused institutional development projects. This work focuses tackling the creation of an educational institution by combining the development of curriculum, faculty, students, and resources around a learning-focused vision and mission.
