Hanson was born in Cumberland, Wisconsin, and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he attended Humboldt Senior High School and played football, baseball, and hockey. He proceeded to play hockey with the St.
Paul Vulcans and Herb Brooks' collegiate squad at the University of Minnesota. Hanson spent 10 seasons with the National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings and Minnesota North Stars, as well as the World Hockey Association's New England Whalers, Minnesota Fighting Saints, and Birmingham Bulls.
