Goelz, a veteran puppet designer, and performer who was hired by Jim Henson and colleagues in the early 1970s to develop Muppets for different television projects. By the time Jim Henson and Frank Oz started working on The Muppet Show, Dave had been persuaded to join them as a puppeteer.
He quickly rose to prominence as the Great Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, among other notable characters. He went on to become the main Muppeteer and one of the Jim Henson Company's primary talents.
