Daron Acemoglu is a Turkish-American economist and one of the world’s most influential scholars in political economy. He is Institute Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he has taught since 1993 and was named Institute Professor in 2019, the university’s highest honor. Educated at the University of York and the London School of Economics , Acemoglu’s research focuses on institutions, economic growth, technological change, inequality, and the interplay between politics and prosperity. He is best known for co-authoring “Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty” (2012) and “The Narrow Corridor” (2019) with James A. Robinson, and “Power and Progress” (2023) with Simon Johnson. In 2024, he shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Johnson and Robinson “for studies of how institutions are formed and affect prosperity.” He continues to explore AI, automation, and the future of work.
