Daniel Patterson is a chef, restaurateur, and food writer from the United States who is regarded as a major proponent of California cuisine. Patterson, a self-taught chef, was born in Lynn, Massachusetts. His father was a lawyer, while his mother was a French and history teacher. He claims that his family's regular trips to France impacted his cuisine preferences.
At the age of 14, he began working as a restaurant dishwasher and went on to Duke University before leaving out. In 1989, he and his then-girlfriend (and eventually wife) Elizabeth Ramsey relocated to Sonoma, California. At the age of 25, Patterson and Ramsey founded Babette's, a French-inspired restaurant in Sonoma.
