At the age of 14, he began working as a restaurant dishwasher and went on to Duke University before leaving out. In 1989, he and his then-girlfriend (and eventually wife) Elizabeth Ramsey relocated to Sonoma, California. At the age of 25, Patterson and Ramsey founded Babette's, a French-inspired restaurant in Sonoma.
