His childhood in a strange tiny manufacturing town, as well as his extended family's backward oddities, suited themselves to his stand-up performance, which has aired on HBO, Showtime, and Comedy Central, among other networks. He went to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst to study communications and theatre after high school.
He later relocated to San Francisco in order to pursue a comedic career. In 1986, he and fellow comedian Alex Reid created the San Francisco Comedy Condo in San Francisco. He currently resides in Los Angeles.
