Dan Barry is a New York Times writer and columnist who has been writing the This Land column since January 2007. Barry is also the author of four books, including "Boys in the Bunkhouse: Servitude and Salvation in the Heartland," which won the PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sportswriting in 2012, and "Bottom of the 33rd: Hope, Redemption, and Baseball's Longest Game," which was released in 2016. Barry has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize twice since 1994: in 2006 for his coverage of post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans and life in New York City, and in 2010 for his coverage of how the Great Recession affected lives and relationships in America. 1992 shared Polk Award; the 2003 American Society of Newspaper Editors Award for deadline reporting, for his coverage of the first anniversary of Sept. 11; the 2005 Mike Berger Award for in-depth human interest reporting; the 2010 Sigma Delta Chi award for column writing from the Society for Professional Journalists; and the 2015 Best American Newspaper Narragansett Award Barry received an honorary degree from his alma mater, St. Bonaventure University, in May 2016, and then gave the graduation address for the 2016 graduating class.
