Damien is an Australian native. He has considerable playing and coaching experience. As a junior, he was ranked in the top three in Australia. In the Australian Junior Open in 2000, he advanced to the Round of 16. Before declaring amateurism for college, he had an ATP ranking in the top 1000.
He opted to attend the University of Southern California on a full scholarship from 2000 to 2002. He was a member of the National Championship team in 2002. He subsequently went to the University of Tennessee, where he was ranked as high as number six in the nation. For the 2004 season, he was named an ALL-SEC and an ALL-AMERICAN.
