Damian Palin, a research engineer, has long been captivated by the biomineralization process, particularly the processes involved in mineral precipitation. He performs research at the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (in cooperation with Nanyang Technical University, Singapore) to test microorganisms' potential to harvest chosen minerals from saltwater desalination brine.
This research was based on convincing and growing data from the science of geomicrobiology, which demonstrates microorganisms' pervasive participation in the mineral cycle on the earth. He says, "I want to keep researching the subject of biomineralization while also looking into the mechanisms that cause moderate energetic mineral (including metal) precipitation for the manufacture of mineral composites."
