Dale Mortensen Biography

Dale T. Mortensen is a Northwestern University Board of Trustees Professor and Professor of Economics, as well as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and a research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA). Professor Mortensen graduated from Willamette University with a B.A. in Economics in 1961 and Carnegie-Mellon University with a Ph.D. in Economics in 1967. Mortensen is a member of the Econometrica Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Society of Labor Economics, and the European Economic Association, among other organizations. In 2005, he received the IZA Labor Economics Prize, and in 2007, he received the Society of Labor Economics Mincer Prize. He was named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association in 2008. Together with Christopher Pissarides and Peter Diamond, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2010 for his contributions to the study of Markets with Search Friction. Mortensen developed the theory of job search and unemployment and applied it to the study of labor turnover, R&D, personal connections, and labor reallocation. The model he helped design has become the most widely used method for analyzing labor market changes and policy impacts. His current study focuses on the creation of equilibrium dynamic models to account for pay dispersion, the time-series behavior of job and labor flows, and the role of reallocation in determining aggregate growth and productivity in Danish microdata. Over fifty scientific articles have been published by him. In 2003, MIT Press released his book Wage Dispersion: Why Are Similar Workers Paid Differently? Job Matching, Unemployment, and Wage Dispersion, a new book co-authored with Pissarides, was released by Oxford University Press in 2011.
