Cynthia G. Brown Biography

Cynthia G. Brown is Vice President for Education Policy at American Progress and was the director of the Center for American Progress and the Institute for America's Future's "Renewing Our Schools, Securing Our Future National Task Force on Public Education." Brown has worked in a number of professional roles addressing high-quality, equitable public education for more than 35 years. She worked as an independent education consultant for local and state school systems, education groups, foundations, nonprofit organizations, and a company before joining American Progress. Brown was the director of the Council of Chief State School Officers' Resource Center for Educational Equity from 1986 until September 2001. President Jimmy Carter nominated her as the first assistant secretary for civil rights in the US Department of Education in 1980. She was previously the chief deputy of the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. She went on to co-direct the nonprofit Equality Center after her political career. She worked for the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the Children's Defense Fund, and the HEW Office for Civil Rights as an investigator before joining the Carter administration. Brown holds a master's degree in public administration from Syracuse University's Maxwell School and a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College. She is a member of the American Youth Policy Forum's and Perry Street Preparatory Public Charter School's boards of directors.
