Cynthia Carroll Biography

In the industrial sector, Cynthia Carroll has led multinational corporations for most of her career. Before working for Alcan Aluminum Corporation, Carroll started her career as an exploratory geologist with the Amoco Production Company in Denver, Colorado. Prior to serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Anglo American from 2007 to 2013, she had a number of executive positions within the firm, including President of Bauxite, Alumina, and Specialty Chemicals and Chief Executive Officer of the Primary Metal Group. Anglo American, which at the time employed some 150,000 people, was among the most diverse mining businesses in the world. The business operated on six continents and produced iron ore, coal, niobium, phosphates, diamonds, platinum group metals, copper, nickel, and nickel. Carroll finished her tenure as chair of Vedanta Resources Holdings Ltd. in 2017. In that capacity, she provided advice to the chairman's office of Vedanta Resources plc on important strategic initiatives, including corporate growth and significant value creation opportunities, primarily in India and Africa. Carroll serves on the boards of a number of public and private companies, such as American Securities, Hitachi Ltd., and Glencore. She has served on the boards of BP, the International Council on Mining and Metals, the International Aluminium Institute, the American Aluminium Association, and the Sara Lee Corporation. She formerly served as chair of the boards of Anglo American Platinum Ltd. and De Beers Société Anonyme. She is a fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining and the Royal Academy of Engineers. Carroll has degrees in geology from Skidmore College in New York, business administration (MBA) from Harvard University, and geology at the master's level from the University of Kansas. She has also received honorary doctorates in law from Skidmore College, an honorary doctorate in science from the University of Exeter, and an honorary doctorate in economics from the University of Limerick. Carroll and her husband are the parents of four kids, who range in age from 21 to 27.
