On AIP's The Dunwich Horror (1970), executive produced by Roger Corman, he made his debut as a co-writer. Hanson began his career as a writer-director with the really disturbing Tab Hunter cult film The Arousers/Sweet Kill (1971, released 1973), and then moved into producing with The Silent Partner, a 1978 Canadian film starring Elliot Gould and Christopher Plummer.
Hanson also co-wrote the screenplay for the long-unreleased—due to unjustified claims of racism (and hence overrated in some quarters)—melodrama White Dog with maverick filmmaker Samuel Fuller (filmed 1982, first theatrical release 1991). He also helped write the narrative for Never Cry Wolf, an unusual Disney nature film (1983).
