Craig Steven Wilder is an American institutions and ideas historian. Ebony & Ivy: Race, Slavery, and the Troubled History of America's Universities (New York: Bloomsbury, 2013), which Kirkus Reviews called one of the best nonfiction books of the year and received numerous book prizes, is Professor Wilder's most recent work. It influenced Grammy Award-winner Esperanza Spalding's song "Ebony and Ivy" in "Emily's D+Evolution" (2016). The film "Dear White People" includes a book titled Ebony & Ivy (2014). A Covenant with Color: Race and Social Power in Brooklyn (New York: Columbia University Press, 2000/2001) and In the Company of Black Men: The African Influence on African American Culture in New York City (New York: New York University Press, 2001/2004) are also among his works. Sven Beckert and Seth Rockman, eds., Slavery's Capitalism (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2016); and "'Driven... from the School of the Prophets': The Colonizationist Ascendance at General Theological Seminary," the first piece in the digital magazine New York History. During Columbia University's 250th Anniversary Commencement in 2004, Craig Steven Wilder was given the University Medal for Excellence. Lecturer Wilder is a senior fellow at the Bard Prison Initiative, where he has previously worked as a visiting professor, commencement speaker, and academic advisor. For more than a decade, BPI has provided hundreds of men and women with the chance to obtain college degrees while incarcerated in New York State prisons. He has advised and appeared in numerous historical documentaries, including Ken Burns' "Race Man" (2016), which explores Jackie Robinson's transformative career; "The Central Park Five," which received a Peabody Award in 2013; Kelly Anderson's groundbreaking and acclaimed exploration of gentrification, "My Brooklyn"; the History Channel's "F.D.R.: A Presidency Revealed"; and Ric Burn's prize-winning Professor Wilder is a member of the board of directors of the Lapidus Center for the Historical Analysis of Transatlantic Slavery at the Schomburg Center of the New York Public Library. He has directed or guided exhibitions at regional and national institutions such as the Brooklyn Historical Society, New York Historical Society, Chicago History Museum, Brooklyn Navy Yard's BLDG 92, Brooklyn Children's Museum, Museum of the City of New York, and Weeksville Heritage Center. He was one of the first historians for New York City's Museum of Sex. Professor Wilder began his work as a South Bronx community organizer. He has taught at Dartmouth College, Williams College, and Long Island University, as well as the New School University and University College London.
