When he began creating songs as a youngster, this fresh-faced native of Southampton, England, was simply following his passion for funkadelic hip-hop and crooning urban stylings. His admiration for Terence Trent D'Arby, Sisqo, and Donnell Jones encouraged him to express his creative passion for art, culture, and history via music. And now he owned the new millennium, and the garage had been redefined. Craig Ashley David was born on May 5, 1981, and began his career slicing and dicing ragga and R&B on local station PCRS 106.5FM before doing club performances and rubbing shoulders with some of music's biggest names. During this period, he met Mark Hill of the Artful Dodgers. Craig was eager to begin producing with Hill after winning a national writing competition. When he placed his own additives on Damage's I'm Ready, a B-side to Wonderful Tonight, he got his big break. Soon after, he remixed his own version of Human League's Human and began performing regularly at nearby bars on weekends. Rewind was another underground hit, and it was a watershed moment for David. His admiration for Stevie Wonder, Faith Evans, and R. Kelly was palpable, but his own vocal ability was beginning to come through. David was able to further build his musical creativity through his and Hill's specialty program on Capital Radio. Fill Me In was another smash success, debuting at number one in the summer of 2000. David had become the youngest male solo artist in the United Kingdom to achieve a number one hit. He was 19 years old at the time.
