His high school team missed out on a state championship by one game. Lovellette encouraged the development of tall, physically demanding, and high-scoring centers. Lovellette, a two-time All-State standout at Garfield High School in Terre Haute, Indiana, led the University of Kansas Jayhawks to the NCAA title in 1952, winning MVP honors and setting an NCAA record with 141 points.
Clyde was a three-time All-America selection at Kansas and led the Big Seven in scoring in each of his three seasons there. Lovellette topped the country in scoring his senior year (1952, 28.4 ppg) and was voted the Helms College Player of the Year while playing for Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Forrest Phog Allen.
