Mathis attended the University of South Carolina and was selected sixth overall in the 1998 Major League Soccer College Draft by the Los Angeles Galaxy. Mathis joined the MetroStars after two and a half years with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mathis departed the MetroStars in 2004 to join Hannover 96 of Germany's Bundesliga.
Mathis had a fantastic first season in Germany but had a less successful second season. He subsequently worked out a deal to return to Major League Soccer, joining Real Salt Lake as an expansion team. His one and only season at Utah was a huge letdown. He was dealt with in Colorado in December 2005.
