Clifford C. Kuhn, MD, also known as the Laugh Doctor, is a physician, medical school professor, humorist, professional speaker, and personal coach who helps people and organizations improve their performance, productivity, and health by engaging with comedy more successfully. He provides motivational keynotes and after-dinner speeches, as well as seminars and workshops lasting up to a full day and teaching audiences as diverse as corporate executives, physicians, and chronically sick patients how to reconnect with positive energy. Cliff, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, attended Ursinus College and Jefferson Medical College before completing his psychiatric residency at the University of Michigan. He has been a member of the medical school faculty since 1974, serving as Chief of Consultation—Liaison Psychiatry, Director of Residency Training, and Associate Chairman of the Psychiatry Department. He has received several honors and plaudits for his achievements as a scholar and teacher. Dr. Kuhn's clinical interests are in mind/body medicine. Decades of working with cancer patients and their families taught him the importance of humor in healing. Cliff's laughing study led him to the world of comedy, and he took a leave of absence from his academic job in 1991 to perform in comedy clubs around the United States. During her vacation, Dr. Kuhn discovered what causes healthy laughing and how such approaches may be applied in therapeutic settings. Cliff lives on their farm in rural Kentucky with his wife Connie, and he is proud of his son Gregory, daughter Rebecca, and grandchildren Jordan, Noah, William, Emma, and Logan.
