Chuck Close Biography

American artist, Chuck Close is famous for his large-scale Photo- Realist portraits and also known for his highly inventive techniques used in painting the human face. A spinal blood clot left Close confined to a wheelchair, almost completely paralyzed in 1988. He continued working with the aid of a brush-holding device that was strapped to his wrist and forearm. He replaced the tiny details of his earlier paintings with a grid of tiles plastered with colorful ovoid and elliptical shapes in the 1990s. Each tile in itself is an abstract painting when viewed up close; and when viewed from a distance, the tiles come together to form a dynamic deconstruction of the human face. The Museum of Modern Art in New York City arranged a major retrospective of Close's portraits in 1998. Close has been mentioned as an Abstract Expressionist, a Photo Realist and a Minimalist but the 1998 retrospective demonstrated his dedication to his unique vision and his growing techniques challenging any easy categorization. And since then, Close's ranking above the American art world remains untouched, and his work has been met with interesting reviews and expensive commissions. President Clinton named Close a recipient of the National Medal of Arts in 2000. His life experiences was made into a full-length documentary, Chuck Close: A Portrait in Progress, directed by Marion Cajori in 2007.
