Ernest Evans was born in Philadelphia on October 3, 1941, and while in high school, he worked at a local chicken shop, where he regularly amused customers by singing and cracking jokes.
His working pranks helped him land an audition with the local Cameo-Parkway label, which signed him in 1959; the portly teen was renamed Chubby Checker, a subtle homage to Fats Domino, at the suggestion of none other than Dick Clark's wife.
