Christine Gregoire Biography

Christine Gregoire, commonly known as Chris, was the Chairman of the Western Governors' Association Inc. Ms. Gregoire is the Governor of Washington State in the United States. Ms. Gregoire is concerned with education, pension and health-care expenses, and simplifying government services and delivery. Washington has regularly ranked as a top place to do business and raise a family under her leadership. Ms. Gregoire was the first woman elected to the post of Attorney General in Washington and spent three terms as such prior to becoming Governor. She oversaw a statewide initiative that resulted in thorough reform of the state's juvenile system, lobbied for stronger ethics rules for state government, explored alternatives to litigation for legal issues, and worked to safeguard privacy and prevent identity theft. She was the primary negotiator in the landmark settlement of state lawsuits against the tobacco industry, and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids rated her the most important attorney general in the country. Since 1988, Ms. Gregoire has been the Director of the Washington Department of Ecology, where she negotiated the safe cleaning and permanent storage of radioactive wastes at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Since July 1, 2013, she has served as a Trustee of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. She has been a member of the Export-Import Bank of the United States' Advisory Committee since November 16, 2012. She attended the University of Washington after graduating from Auburn High School. She earned a teaching credential as well as bachelor's degrees in speech and sociology. Ms. Gregoire graduated from Gonzaga University with a law degree in 1977 and an honorary Doctor of Law degree in 1995.
