Cheryl Holder Biography

Dr. Cheryl L. Holder is a board-certified internist who has devoted her medical career to assisting underprivileged people. She began her career in 1987 as a National Health Service Corps Scholar in Miami-Dade County, Florida, working with medically disadvantaged populations. Dr. Holder mentored University of Miami Family Medicine Residents during their Internal Medicine rotation at Jackson Memorial Hospital under the supervision of Lynn Carmichael, MD, regarded as the "Father of Family Medicine." Dr. Holder was the Medical Director of Jackson Health System's North Dade Health Center from 1990 until 2009. As Medical Director, she oversaw the development of an HIV care and treatment program funded by the Ryan White Care Act. Dr. Holder has served on advisory and programmatic review groups for HIV treatment and vaccine research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Holder oversaw the first school-based health center in Miami-Dade County, helped to establish the Florida Coalition for School-based Health Care Services, and was involved in the drive to expand school-based health care in Miami-Dade County, Florida. She began teaching at Florida International University's Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in September 2009. Her primary goals are to teach medical students about working in underprivileged areas and to promote diversity in the health professions through pipeline initiatives. Dr. Holder oversees the "Period One Primary Care Preceptorship."
