Chaffin began racing Late Models at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway a few years later. He had accumulated an amazing record at short tracks around the country by the early 1990s, including two track championships in 1993 and 1995. He made his first Busch Series start in 1993.
He dabbled in the Busch Series over the following couple of years, starting 10 races in 1993 and 1994. Chaffin was unable to find full-time work, so he opted to construct his own vehicles and compete in a few races in 1995 and 1996.
