Following a lengthy career at the American Heart Association, where he served as its CEO from 1997 to 2008, Cass Wheeler recently formed his own consulting firm. The group consolidated its 56 state and metropolitan affiliates into eight regions under his direction and established a single corporate structure. Revenue increased from $400 million to $650 million within the same time period. The award-winning Go Red for Women Campaign to raise awareness about heart disease in women, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (with the William J. Clinton Foundation) to combat childhood obesity, Get With the Guidelines to improve hospital care and outcomes, and the Power to End Stroke targeted to African Americans were among the new initiatives launched. By 2010, the association will have established a far-reaching health impact target of a 25% decrease in coronary heart disease, stroke, and risk. Wheeler, a business graduate of the University of Texas in Austin, began his career with the American Cancer Society soon after graduation. He then worked as a stockbroker in Dallas for two New York Stock Exchange businesses before joining the American Heart Association's Texas Affiliate. Wheeler served on the National Health Council's board of directors in the past. He was a member of the Independent Sector's board of directors, where he led the Audit Committee and sat on the Ethics and Accountability Committee, as well as the Executive Committee. He was a co-convener of the Senate Finance Committee's Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, which was formed to evaluate and suggest ways to enhance governance, ethical behavior, and effective practice of public charities and private foundations. President Bill Clinton nominated Wheeler to the Commission on Improving Economic Opportunity in Tobacco-Reliant Communities While Protecting Public Health. He also served on the National Human Services Assembly, Partnership for Prevention, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, and Research! boards of directors. America. Wheeler is a member of the American Legacy Foundation, the Paul G. Rogers Society for Global Health Research, and the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research's Advisory Committee. Secretary Leavitt of the Department of Health and Human Services named him to the Advisory Committee to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in January 2008. Wheeler received the Essence of Leadership Award for Excellence in National Executive Leadership from the National Human Services Assembly in September 2005. The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, as well as the National Council of Better Business Bureaus, have given him the President's Award. He was named one of The NonProfit Times' Power and Influence Top 50 leaders in 2006, 2007, and 2008. He was recognized in World Pharmaceutical Frontiers' first Pharma 40 in July 2007, a list of the industry's most significant persons as determined by industry professionals. He carried the Olympic torch through Dallas on its trip to the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City on December 12, 2001. Wheeler is the author of You've Gotta Have Heart: Achieving Purpose Beyond Profit in the Social Sector, a book aimed at improving the nonprofit sector's performance.
