She looks at the various ways in which a better knowledge of human behavior may contribute to energy efficiency gains. For example, by implementing behavioral principles at the policy, technology, physical environment, media/marketing, and organizational/community levels, considerable energy savings can be achieved. Dr. Armel is a co-chair of the Behavior, Energy, and Climate Change Conference, as well as the director of the Precourt Institute's Behavior and Energy Bibliographic Database and Website. He also teaches behavior and energy courses at Stanford. In addition to these activities, Dr. Armel creates specialized energy efficiency treatments based on behavioral and design concepts, as well as methods to assess their success. Her most recent project is a cooperation between academic and non-academic groups to create and test a system that uses smart meters to give people feedback on their home power usage. Dr. Armel earned his Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego, then went on to Stanford University for postdoctoral study in Neuro-Economics. She investigated how affect and motivation influence behavior using behavioral, psychophysiological, and neuroscientific approaches in these projects. She just finished a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford School of Medicine, where she applied health promotion intervention approaches to the field of energy efficiency.
