in Molecular Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1997, and worked as a faculty member at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory before joining the Johns Hopkins faculty. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a Gairdner Foundation International Award winner from 1998.
