Carol Browner Biography

Carol Browner works as a Senior Counselor at Albright Stonebridge Group, a global strategy company, where she advises clients on environmental issues, energy conservation, climate change, water security, and resource scarcity. She works with clients in a variety of industries to help them improve corporate responsibility, obtain market access, detect political and regulatory risks, and form strategic alliances and commercial ties. Ms. Browner also serves on the Board of the League of Conservation Voters and as a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress. Ms. Browner was most recently Assistant to President Obama and Director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policies, where she was responsible for the federal government's coordination of environmental, energy, climate, transportation, and related policy. During her time in office, the White House secured the biggest investment in renewable energy in history and developed a national vehicle strategy that included new automobile fuel efficiency requirements as well as the first-ever greenhouse emission reductions. From 2001 until 2008, Ms. Browner was a founding principal of The Albright Group LLC. Ms. Browner was the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency from 1993 until 2001. As an administrator, she enacted the nation's strictest air pollution regulations, established a fine particle clean air standard for the first time, and championed the renewal of the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Food Quality Protection Act. She was well-known for collaborating with environmentalists and industry to establish scientifically-based public health safeguards while allowing corporations significant flexibility in how to achieve those requirements. She worked throughout the organization to ensure that the most vulnerable, notably children, were protected. Ms. Browner served as Florida's Secretary of Environmental Regulation from 1991 to 1993, during which time she spearheaded the country's biggest ecological restoration effort, restoring the Everglades' natural water flow. Ms. Browner is a member of the Center for American Progress's Executive Committee and was a founding board member from 2003 to 2008. Ms. Browner graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville with a B.A. and a law degree. She is married to former New York Congressman Tom Downey and has one kid.
