About Carlo Petrini
Carlo Petrini Biography
Carlo Petrini was born on June 22, 1949, in Bra, Italy. In 1977, he began writing about wine and cuisine, and he has since written to hundreds of Italian magazines and other publications all over the world. Petrini was involved in the founding and development of Arcigola, an Italian non-profit food, and wine organization, in 1983. Petrini began to form alliances with friends and colleagues in and around the aims of returning food back to its origins as he became increasingly dissatisfied by the industrialization of the food supply and the degradation of quality in the food he observed around him. Slow Food was formed in 1986 in protest of the building of a McDonald's in Rome's Piazza di Spagna. Every year since its creation, he has been chosen president of the group. The movement now has over 80,000 members and supporters in over 50 countries. Slow Food International is in charge of producing international publications, booklets, and guides in a variety of languages. In 2004, Petrini dreamed up Terra Madre, a biennial conference in Torino that brings together 5,000 small-scale farmers, chefs, and food specialists to share information and establish relationships. Furthermore, every year, students from all over the world enroll at Petrini's University of Gastronomic Sciences, which has campuses in the Italian regions of Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna. Carlo has received numerous awards and honors, including the International Wine and Spirit Competition's Communicator of the Year trophy, the Sicco Mansholt Prize from Holland, an honorary degree in Cultural Anthropology from the Instituto Universitario Suor Orsola Benincasa of Naples, an honorary degree from the University of New Hampshire, and the Eckart Witzigmann Science and Technology Award. In 2004, Time Magazine dubbed him an "Innovator" on their list of European heroes. Carlo Petrini's charm, enthusiasm, and conviction are mirrored in the movement's appeal as well as the Slow Food philosophy, which aims to restore true culinary traditions and table delights while also preserving the world's quality food and wine legacy. Carlo Petrini is a visionary who, one mouthful at a time, seeks to enhance the world's agricultural and food supply.
