Carl June Biography

In the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Carl June, MD, is the Richard W. Vague Professor in Immunotherapy. Tisagenlecleucel, the first FDA-approved gene therapy, was developed and commercialized as a result of his work. His research on T cell treatments for cancer therapy has made him famous. June is a 1979 graduate of the Naval Academy in Annapolis and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He is currently the director of the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies and the director of Translational Research at the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania. He is also an investigator of the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute. In 1978 and 1979, he received graduate training in immunology and malaria from Dr. Paul-Henri Lambert at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, and from 1983 to 1986, he received postdoctoral training in transplantation biology from E. Donnell Thomas and John Hansen at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology are two of his board certifications. He has a research lab that investigates diverse processes of lymphocyte activation in relation to immunological tolerance and cancer and chronic infection adoptive immunotherapy. His research team reported data in 2011 that constituted the first effective and long-term demonstration of gene transfer therapy for cancer treatment. Adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and adults and children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia are currently undergoing clinical studies using this technique, in which patients are treated with genetically modified copies of their own T-cells. Early findings in that group suggest that 90% of patients react to the medication, and studies using this technique have just begun for patients with various blood malignancies and solid tumors, such as pancreatic cancer, mesothelioma, and glioblastoma, a kind of brain cancer. It was the first customized cellular therapy for cancer treatment to obtain the coveted Breakthrough Therapy designation from the US Food and Drug Administration in 2014. He has more than 350 publications to his credit and has received numerous awards and honors, including election to the Institute of Medicine in 2012, the William B. Coley Award, the Richard V. Smalley Memorial Award from the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer, the AACR-CRI Lloyd J. Old Award in Cancer Immunology, the Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence, and the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig D. He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014.
