Camille Cortinas was born in Dallas, Texas, and her grandmother, a migrant farmworker, was her first musical influence. She was taught lovely Spanish folk songs by her grandmother, which charmed her and started her on a musical road. She got her first guitar for her 16th birthday and begged her elder brother to teach her how to play it.
Camille spent time honing her songwriting and guitar abilities in Italy and France. When she returned to Texas, she began to consider the possibility of forming a band. The band dream, however, was cut short when, at the age of 21, physicians discovered a hole in her heart, necessitating open-heart surgery.
