Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. graduated from Yale University with a B.A. and an M.D. from Western Reserve University. He won a gold medal in the Olympic Games in 1956 as a member of the successful United States rowing team, pulling the No. 6 oar. He received his surgical training at the Cleveland Clinic and St. George's Hospital in London.
He was awarded the Bronze Star in 1968 while serving as an Army medic in Vietnam. Dr. Esselstyn has worked at the Cleveland Clinic since 1968. He has served as President of the Staff and a member of the Board of Governors throughout that period.
