Caldwell Esselstyn Biography

Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. graduated from Yale University with a B.A. and an M.D. from Western Reserve University. He won a gold medal in the Olympic Games in 1956 as a member of the successful United States rowing team, pulling the No. 6 oar. He received his surgical training at the Cleveland Clinic and St. George's Hospital in London. He was awarded the Bronze Star in 1968 while serving as an Army medic in Vietnam. Dr. Esselstyn has worked at the Cleveland Clinic since 1968. He has served as President of the Staff and a member of the Board of Governors throughout that period. He led the Clinic's Breast Cancer Task Force and oversaw its Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Section. Dr. Esselstyn was President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons in 1991. That same year, he convened the inaugural National Conference on the Elimination of Coronary Artery Disease in Tucson, Arizona. At 1997, he presided over a follow-up meeting, the Summit on Cholesterol and Coronary Disease, in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, which drew more than 500 physicians and health-care professionals. Dr. Esselstyn was the inaugural winner of the Benjamin Spock Award for Compassion in Medicine in April 2005. In 2009, he was honored by the Cleveland Clinic Alumni Association with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. In September 2010, he was inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame. Dr. Esselstyn was awarded the 2013 Deerfield Academy Alumni Association Heritage Award for Outstanding Achievement and Service, as well as the 2013 Yale University GEORGE H.W. BUSH '48 LIFETIME OF LEADERSHIP AWARD. Dr. Esselstyn's surgical competence in the areas of endocrine and breast illness is mentioned in "The Best Doctors in America" 1994-1995 published by Woodward & White. In 1995, he released his ground-breaking long-term nutritional study on the arrest and reversal of coronary artery disease in critically sick patients. That same study was updated at 12 years and evaluated for a total of twenty years in his book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, making it one of the longest longitudinal studies of its kind. Dr. Esselstyn and his wife, Ann Crile Esselstyn, have been vegetarians for almost 26 years. Dr. Esselstyn is currently the director of The Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute's cardiovascular prevention and reversal program. The Esselstyns are the parents of four children and 10 grandkids.
