Cai Guo-Qiang is busy smashing records when he isn't drawing—and detonating—gunpowder portraits or orchestrating enormous outdoor explosive events like the fireworks at the 2008 Beijing Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies. His 14 gunpowder works sold for $9.5 million at Christie's in Hong Kong in 2007, setting a new auction record for modern Chinese art at the time.
He is the first Chinese artist to win a Venice Biennale award, as well as the first live artist to have a solo exhibition in a Chinese state-run institution.
