Burgess was the third Black American to be given a football scholarship at the University of Miami, Coral Cable, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Chemistry and was named a First Team All-American Defensive Back.
He was inducted into the Outstanding College Athletes of America Hall of Fame, as well as the University of Miami Hall of Fame and the Orange Bowl Ring of Honor. Burgess was chosen to the NFL's All-Rookie squad and named the Jets Rookie of the Year as a first-round draught pick of the New York Jets, the NFL's 13th pick.
