He presently competes for Andretti Green Racing, which is co-owned by Michael Andretti, a former Champ Car and IRL racer. From 1994 until 2001, Herta raced full-time in the Champ Car World Series for team owners like Chip Ganassi, Bobby Rahal, and Gerry Fosythe, winning two events back-to-back at Mazda Raceway in Laguna Seca in Monterey, California in 1998 and 1999. He might have won three, since he was the leader until the penultimate lap of the 1996 race at Laguna Seca, when Alex Zanardi plunged to Herta's right heading to the legendary Corkscrew chicane, making the move through the dirt on the chicane's right-hand turn, and taking the race win from Herta. The manoeuvre is now known as The Pass in Champ Car mythology. Herta won his maiden IndyCar Series race at Chicagoland Speedway in 2003, in only his third IRL appearance after joining the team when Dario Franchitti was sidelined. In 2004, he was re-instated in a four-car team, generally driving research engines. In the Firestone Indy 400 at the Michigan International Speedway on July 31, 2005, Herta won his second IndyCar Series race, defeating AGR teammate Dan Wheldon in a tight finish.
