Broken Bells Biography

Broken Bells is an American rock band formed by Brian Burton (better known as Danger Mouse), an artist-producer, and James Mercer, lead vocalist and guitarist for the Oregonian indie rock band The Shins. Broken Bells is a duo that composes and creates music, but on tour, they are joined by a full band. Following the success of Broken Bells' self-titled debut, Mercer and Burton have revealed plans to record a follow-up. On Tuesday, September 29, 2009, the project was initially announced. After meeting in 2004 at the Roskilde Event, a Danish music festival, and discovering that they were admirers of each other's work, the two decided to collaborate. It took another four years for the two to start working together, but in March 2008, Mercer and Burton began secretly recording together in Burton's Los Angeles studio. Their music is melodious, but also experimental, according to the two. The band sent out their first email update on December 14, with a binary-coded message reading, "The High Road is hard to locate," and a link to the band's web page, which now has a new color scheme, for "more details." The band sent out an email to fans on December 21st, announcing the release of their first single The High Road, which was made available for free download on their official website. On March 9, 2010, the self-titled first album was released in the United States and Canada. There is also a version of the record that is meant to be a music box that, when opened, plays a song called The Overture that is not on the album. Prior to the founding of Broken Bells, Mercer and Burton collaborated on the tune Insane Lullaby from Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse's album Dark Night Of The Soul. Broken Bells have played the song numerous times since then, typically as a memorial to late Sparklehorse vocalist Mark Linkous, who passed in early 2010.
