Brian Schmidt is a Distinguished Professor of Astronomy and the Australian National University's 12th Vice-Chancellor and President. Brian grew up in Montana and Alaska and graduated from the University of Arizona with a bachelor's degree in physics and astronomy in 1989. He received his Astronomy Master's degree (1992) and Ph.D. (1993) from Harvard University under the direction of Robert Kirshner.
He and Nick Suntzeff founded the HighZ SN Search team in 1994, which consisted of 20 astronomers from five continents who utilized distant exploding stars to track the expansion of the Universe back in time. The finding of an accelerating Universe by this group was selected Breakthrough of the Year by Science Magazine in 1998.
