Brian May Biography

As the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen, he earned international renown as a musician, vocalist, songwriter, and astrophysicist. He plays the Red Special, a home-built electric guitar. We Will Rock You, Tie Your Mother Down, and Fat Bottomed Girls are among his band's tunes. In 2005, he was named a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his contributions to the music business and charitable activities. May graduated from Imperial College with a Ph.D. in astrophysics in 2007 and served as Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University from 2008 to 2013. He divides his time between London and Windlesham, Surrey. He is an outspoken animal rights activist who was named vice-president of the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in September 2012. May was rated the 7th best guitarist of all time in a Planet Rock survey in 2005. On Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, he was placed No. 26. May was voted the second-best guitarist of all time by readers of Guitar World magazine in 2012.
