As the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen, he earned international renown as a musician, vocalist, songwriter, and astrophysicist. He plays the Red Special, a home-built electric guitar. We Will Rock You, Tie Your Mother Down, and Fat Bottomed Girls are among his band's tunes.
In 2005, he was named a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his contributions to the music business and charitable activities. May graduated from Imperial College with a Ph.D. in astrophysics in 2007 and served as Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University from 2008 to 2013.
