Brian Johnson Biography

After the demise of AC/longtime DC's lead vocalist Bon Scott in 1980, Brian Johnson joined the band. Beginning with his debut album with AC/DC, Back in Black, which is now recognized as a rock classic and the second best-selling album of all time (global), he is credited for pushing the band in a more heavy metal path. It, along with his following albums with the band, cemented his reputation as one of rock music's most recognizable and imitated voices. Johnson was a member of the Newcastle glam-rock band Geordie before joining AC/DC in 1972. The band disbanded in 1978 after a string of successful singles, but Johnson reformed it in 1980. Johnson was called to audition for AC/DC shortly after signing a record deal. He earned the position by performing Nutbush City Limits by Ike and Tina Turner and Whole Lotta Rosie by AC/DC, which was recorded in 1977 with Bon Scott. He was the first choice of the band. Unbeknownst to Johnson, a Geordie album had been submitted to AC/DC shortly after Bon Scott's death, encouraging them to consider him. Years before, after watching Geordie perform, Bon Scott commended Johnson's vocal and aggressive performing approach to the rest of AC/DC. Johnson co-wrote all of AC/songs DC's with the Young brothers for 10 years until personal problems got in the way in 1990, just as the band's album The Razor's Edge was being written. When the band performs T.N.T., Johnson handles all of the lead vocals, with Malcolm Young, Cliff Williams, and occasionally Angus Young providing backup vocals. Johnson's sartorial signature is a cap pulled down above his eyes, which he rarely wears in public. He used to wear a flat cap, which was previously considered a sign of Tyneside (Bryan Ferry wears one on the back of his album Taxi), but in recent years, he has mostly worn a baseball cap. He has a full head of hair despite the helmet. Johnson's father was a Sergeant Major in the Durham Light Infantry of the British Army, and his mother was Italian. Johnson attributes his screaming voice to his father. Johnson's first marriage ended in divorce shortly before he joined AC/DC, leaving him with two children. He had a cameo in Danny Cannon's film Goal! as a Geordie watching a Newcastle United match in a pub in Los Angeles.
