The play explores the enduring consequences of Copeland's youth in San Leandro, a 99.99 percent white Bay Area suburb that was formerly considered one of America's most bigoted enclaves in the 1960s and 1970s. Isolation, racial identity, and atonement were key themes in the drama, which resonated with viewers. It's "a wonderful blend of sardonic humor and sadness, anger and inspiration, a distinctive narrative of profound isolation that appeals to anybody who's ever felt out of place," according to the San Francisco Chronicle. GENUINE went on to become the longest-running solo play in San Francisco theatre history, lasting almost two years. The musical went on to receive critical praise in both Los Angeles and Off Broadway. The program spawned a best-selling memoir and attracted Hollywood's interest. A feature film and a television series based on NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN are now under development. In the feature film THE BUCKET LIST, starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, director Rob Reiner cast Copeland as Lee Chambers, the son of Morgan Freeman's character.
