Brett Crozier is a retired U.S. Navy captain, naval aviator, and author. A native of Santa Rosa, California, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy. Crozier began as a helicopter pilot before transitioning to F/A-18 fighters, flying combat missions over Iraq. He commanded an F/A-18 squadron, served as executive officer on the USS Ronald Reagan, commanded the amphibious command ship USS Blue Ridge, and in 2019 took command of the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. In March 2020, amid a COVID-19 outbreak on the ship, he wrote a memo urging Navy leaders to evacuate most of the crew to prevent further spread. The letter leaked to the press, leading to his relief from command by Acting Secretary Thomas Modly. Crozier later tested positive for the virus. He retired in 2022 after 30 years of service. He authored the 2023 book “Surf When You Can: Lessons in Life, Loyalty, and Leadership.” Post-retirement, he has worked as CEO of LTA Research and in veterans advocacy.
