Gaughan made an impression on the Series as a rookie, winning two races in a NAPA-sponsored truck at Texas Motor Speedway on route to an 11th-place finish in the championship points standings and the Raybestos Rookie of the Year award. Gaughan proved skeptics wrong in his second full season, proving that a team located on the West Coast could compete and win in NASCAR. Gaughan demonstrated to competitors that his squad would be a force to be reckoned with from the moment the green flag dropped at Daytona. Gaughan was a championship candidate all season, with three poles, six victories (two more at Texas), 14 top-fives, and 18 top-10 finishes. Gaughan had a points lead heading into the last race of the season, but a mid-race crash dropped him to fourth in the final championship standings. Despite his sadness at not winning the championship, Gaughan's talent and persistence on the track were recognised. Gaughan moved up the racing ladder in 2004, joining Penske Racing's three-car campaign in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. Gaughan finished four times in the top ten, including a Cup career-best fourth place at Talladega Superspeedway. He finished second in the overall Rookie of the Year rankings after being the highest-finishing rookie in seven races. Gaughan returned to his family-owned race team in Las Vegas after a season in the Cup ranks, determined to win the championship that had eluded him two years earlier.
