Branford Marsalis, the world-renowned saxophonist, has always had a wide range of musical interests. The three-time Grammy Award winner has continued to make his mark as an instrumentalist, composer, and as the founder of Marsalis Music, a label that has allowed him to generate both his own developments and those of the jazz world's most enticing new and existing artists since its inception in 2002. Marsalis is also committed to transforming the future of jazz education. He has lectured at Michigan State, San Francisco State, Stanford, and North Carolina Central colleges, among others. Beyond such endeavors, Marsalis Jams, an interactive initiative in which prominent jazz ensembles offer concert/jam sessions in mini-residences, is introducing a fresh approach to jazz education to jazz students and jazz listeners in universities and high schools. Following Hurricane Katrina's devastation, Marsalis, one of the most socially aware voices in the arts, rapidly engaged himself in rescue operations. He is the honorary head of the New Orleans Habitat for Humanity initiative to rebuild the city, and he co-founded the Habitat Musicians' Village with his friend Harry Connick Jr., which provides housing for musicians in the city's historic Ninth Ward. Marsalis has been nominated for the 62nd Grammy Awards in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category for his album The Secret Between The Shadow And The Soul, which he had previously won. He was also nominated for Best Improvised Jazz Solo for The Windup at the 62nd Grammy Awards.
