After being given a SCOBY, Leone became interested in fermentation. Leone was employed as an intern at Bon Appétit as a test kitchen assistant after graduation, a position that required him to do all of the buying, cleaning, and, most importantly, all of the dishes, prompting him to describe his job as a glorified dishwashing job.

Later, he was offered full-time employment at the magazine, and he rose up the ranks to Test Kitchen Manager. It's Alive with Brad has grown into a regular show that follows Leone as he cooks using microbial food cultures, with subsequent episodes focusing on more general dishes and on-location activities.

It's Alive has been described as half cooking program, part travel show, part Pop-Up Video, and part continuous blooper reel for its humorous editing and Leone's laid-back cooking approach.

It's Alive's casual and personality-driven aesthetic, as well as Gourmet Makes starring Claire Saffitz, have been compared to Bon Appétit's curated [and] upscale brand, and have been described by Forbes as "changing the way Condé Nast handles web video."
