Bora Milutinovic Biography

He is a Mexican-Serbian football coach, and he is one of only two people in history to have managed five different World Cup teams: Mexico (1986), Costa Rica (1990), the United States (1994), Nigeria (1998), and China (1998). (2002). He is also the only coach to advance four separate teams through the first round, before failing to do so with China, earning him the moniker "Miracle Worker," which was bestowed to him by Alan Rothenberg, then-president of the USSF. Milutinovic was in serious talks to take over the national team in his home Serbia in the summer of 2003. Despite a month of encouragement from Serbian football officials, Milutinovic declined the offer and joined the Honduran national squad shortly after. Before departing on June 30, 2004, he took the squad to the first round of CONCACAF qualifiers. He left during World Cup qualification because of the prevailing negative climate produced by statements made by the country's coaches, officials, and journalists. Milutinovic's club coaching career has not been nearly as successful. In 1999, he led the MetroStars of Major League Soccer to the league's poorest record ever. In 1987, he played nine games for Udinese Calcio in Italian Serie B, as well as a brief run in the Qatar league with Al-Sadd. In the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, Milutinovic managed the Iraqi national team to two draws and one loss.
