They converted the Pinto into a racer together, and Bobby began racing on weekends at small circuits. Bobby continued to ascend the racing ladder from this moment forward. Despite having a father who was a great racing driver, Bobby had to work hard to achieve success. Bobby made his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut in 1998 at Rockingham, North Carolina's North Carolina Motor Speedway. He started in 27th place and finished in the 37th position after leading three laps. Bobby competed for a number of underfunded Busch Series teams over the following several years until joining Team Rensi Motorsports in 2002. He had been hoping for a chance to drive the No. 25 Team Marines Ford and here was it? Bobby led 83 laps at New Hampshire International Speedway on his way to his first victory and the first for Team Rensi Motorsports. Bobby had his finest year ever in 2003, winning four races and finishing 49 points behind the Busch Series champion. Bobby finished 13 times in the top five and 22 times in the top 10. Bobby raced in 23 Busch Series races in 2004 before joining PPI Motorsports in the Nextel Cup Series. He finished the 2005 season with PPI Motorsports. Bobby Hamilton participated in the Craftsman Truck Series for his late father's organization, Bobby Hamilton Racing, in 2006. Bobby returned home for the 2007 Nationwide Series season after a fortuitous encounter in Bristol, Tennessee with Team Rensi Motorsports Co-Owner Ed Rensi and Team President Ronnie Russell.
