He perished in the LOT Polish Airlines aircraft disaster in Poland in 1980 as a member of the United States amateur boxing team. However, he was unable to board the plane due to an auto accident that occurred one week before the fateful flight.
Bobby Czyz made a fast start in professional boxing in the early 1980s, and he was soon set to face world middleweight champion, Marvin Hagler. After a 10-round loss to veteran Mustafa Hamsho in November 1982, he had to rebuild his career from the ground up.
