Bobby Czyz Biography

He perished in the LOT Polish Airlines aircraft disaster in Poland in 1980 as a member of the United States amateur boxing team. However, he was unable to board the plane due to an auto accident that occurred one week before the fateful flight. Bobby Czyz made a fast start in professional boxing in the early 1980s, and he was soon set to face world middleweight champion, Marvin Hagler. After a 10-round loss to veteran Mustafa Hamsho in November 1982, he had to rebuild his career from the ground up. He gained weight, continued to win, and in September 1986, he eventually found himself in the ring with a world champion, IBF light heavyweight champion Slobodan Kaver. In five rounds, Czyz defeated him. Before facing 'Prince' Charles Williams in October 1987, Czyz had three defenses: a one-round KO of David Sears, a see-saw second-round KO of Willie Edwards, and a fifth-round TKO of Jim McDonald. Czyz knocked Williams down early in the bout, but the challenger not only lasted in the fight but also pounded Czyz's left eye shut on his route to a TKO victory and the championship after eight rounds of fighting. After losing a decision to Dennis Andries in May 1988, Czyz went on to win a few of the fights, which led to two attempts at the world championship in 1989. Despite his best efforts, Czyz lost both challenges: a 12-round decision to Virgil Hill for the WBA championship in North Dakota in March, and a 10th-round TKO defeat to Williams in an IBF title rematch in June. In June 1990, Czyz stopped then-unbeaten Andrew Maynard in seven rounds and subsequently moved up to cruiserweight. In March 1991, he faced Robert Daniels for the WBA world cruiserweight title, which he won unanimously. Before Czyz resigned from the championship, he successfully defended it against Bash Ali and Donny Lalonde (both by unanimous decision). Czyz retired and became a television boxing analyst after being stopped by David Izegwire in August 1994. Czyz has worked alongside Steve Albert and Ferdie Pacheco in his new job, covering fights in a variety of locales across the world. As a part of Showtime's team in December 1994, he covered the first world title bout ever staged in Ecuador. He made a brief comeback as a competitive heavyweight boxer in 1996 but was knocked out in six rounds by Evander Holyfield and promptly retired. Czyz has continued to work for Showtime as a color commentator, and he enjoys signing autographs for his fans. He has no plans to return to the ring as a fighter in the future. He was inducted into the Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame after that.
