Bobby Convey Biography

Due to optic nerve injury, Bobby Convey is partly blind in his left eye. Bobby was a part of the Bradenton Academy's first class, which includes Landon Donovan, Oguchi Onyewu, and DaMarcus Beasley, all of whom are currently members of the national team. They worked together to help the Under-17 Team finish fourth in the 1999 World Cup in New Zealand. Convey rose to prominence after being recruited by Major League Soccer's D.C. United in 2000. He was the youngest player ever signed by Major League Soccer that year. Convey was supposed to spend the bulk of the season with the Project-40 squad, but as United struggled, he was called upon to come in and perform very quickly. In 2000, he appeared in 22 games for United, starting 18 of them. Convey made his United debut in a 4-0 defeat to the Los Angeles Galaxy in the home opener at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium on March 25, 2000, and received his first start in a 2-1 loss to the Columbus Crew on May 3, 2000. Convey did not serve up Raul Diaz Arce at the far post for a header past a hapless David Kramer until 4 July 2000 against the Colorado Rapids. The adolescent also shone against Newcastle United of the English Premier League when the Magpies came to D.C. for a preseason training camp. During the friendly, Convey's two assists and outstanding work rate drew the attention of Newcastle's legendary manager Bobby Robson.
